Chapter Thirteen – Dirty Mouth

Jerwane’s bedroom was the second to the left at the top of the stairs. The setup reminded Shelia of an old western saloon, with the staircase rising to a landing with four-bedroom doors. However, there were only two bathrooms on the second floor, shared by inhabitants via a connecting door. Jerwane shared his bathroom with Celeste and Anya.

It was a small bathroom with a stand-up shower for one with no tub and a double vanity sink. The doorway from Jerwane’s side of the room looked as if a hole had been knocked in the rear wall of the bathroom and a door stuck in its place. The arrangement took no floor space from the room, but the bedroom walls were shared on both sides. On the left, he shared a common wall with Celeste, on the right Trevion.

He moved about the space quietly, unpacking his things, hanging his ski suit in the wardrobe in the far corner. The headboard of the bed rested against the inner wall, which faced the walkway landing, giving wide berth in the room for the sole four drawer dresser and the chair that sat under the picture frame window. It wasn’t Shelia’s ideal set up for a bedroom, but she figured he had his reasons.

Following suit, she unpacked her things as well. Uncertain where the evening was heading, Belinda had taught her to pack prepared for anything. Across the bed, she laid a pair of pink flannel pajamas and besides those, she laid out a see-through lingerie top with matching, crotchless panties. Jerwane looked at the two items on the bed and pointed to the pink jammies. He said nothing else as he went inside the bathroom and started the shower. In an ideal situation, she would have joined him. However, in this situation, the man had locked the door and she couldn’t get inside. Instead, she waited.

Picking up the book Another Brooklyn that he was reading, she sat in the chair and begin to flip through the pages. By the time he came out of the bathroom, followed by a billow of steam, she had reached the end of Chapter One. Sticking a sliver of paper between the pages, Shelia tossed the book in the chair, grabbed the pink jammies, and headed for the shower. It was a quick wash. She was tired and emotionally tapped and trying to fit together the bits and pieces of information given to her by his friends her desire to calculate the odds didn’t add up to a good night’s rest. For the oddest reason, she still didn’t feel like she had a handle on what type of man she was dealing with.

Dried and dressed and her hair wrapped for the night, she exited the bedroom to find him in the chair. He stood as she came out, moving to the bed and turning back the covers. As he passed the dresser, he grabbed a bottle of lotion, which made Shelia raise her eyebrows on his intended use of the shea butter skin softener.
